I'm beginning to accept that SJ is going to end up in the 4-5 draft position, and I'm OK with that.
Using Elite Prospects as my source Fantilli is the clear number 2,so SJ is not getting him. Carlsson is ranked in the 3 spot, but is also at #4 depending on which affiliated source is referenced. Chances are that SJ will not fall far enough to have a chance at Carlsson. There is a player, not named Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson, that I think could help SJ out in 2-3 seasons though: Zach Benson. He's in the 5 spot at Elite Prospects and falls between 5 and 9 depending on which affiliated ranking source you look at. There's one consistent thing though that's independent of his draft spot rankings, and that's his points production. He's second to Connor Bedard. I also believe Andrew Cristall could be a good pick up, although his draft ranking range falls lower than Benson's and is spread out over the high to low end range much more than Benson's.

Honestly depending where we're picking, it could work out with Michkov as well. Of course there's his contract situation meaning he won't be over for a few years (and could never come across), but since moving to a horrendously bad* HK Sochi team he's put up 6G4A in 19 games played. For reference, in Ovechkin's draft year he put up 13G11A in 53 games. The other benefit of picking Michkov is since he won't come over for a couple years, the team won't get the bump in production until he comes over so they'll likely get a few more early picks while they wait for him to come across. *The team has 7 wins, 53 losses and a -111 goal differential and had a 21 game losing streak recently.

I'm beginning to accept that SJ is going to end up in the 4-5 draft position, and I'm OK with that. I wouldn't be so sure about this. There's still no reason why AZ, CHI, and ANA cannot surpass us, given the way schedules look and trends that work in those teams' favor for doing better than us the rest of the way, especially once we trade Timo, Reimer, and Bonino (and maybe EK65?). We're going to be worse without the first three, and if we can trade EK65 we will have basically nothing left to show. Couture and Hertl are gonna be left on islands. We will have almost no offense to speak of because Timo and EK65 are driving our offense at an insane rate. None of the three teams I mentioned above are going to be losing anywhere close to what we'll be losing through trades, so our fall will be precipitous. I've given up on CBJ catching us, but if we can fall to #2 then the worst that could happen is we pick 4th, but we would be unlikely to fall that far. And don't forget this either: let's say, for example, after the lottery we finish in the 5th spot. We'll also have whatever 1st we get for Timo, and another for EK65 if the stars align. Don't forget how much a team like AZ loves them some draft picks, so if they were to land in the third spot, and say our other two firsts were in the high teens or low twenties, do you think it's out of the realm of possibility we could try to trade one or both of those other picks along with our 1st for that spot? I don't know that that would be wise for us, but it's not unthinkable that we could look into such things, especially if it gives us a chance to land a truly game-changing talent.

if we do trade Timo and all the spare pieces...please leblanc too, then maybe we fall into top 3 spots for draft....
I still see worse case scenario at 50% odds, GMMG signs Timo and we keep Ek65, we are doomed for 5-10 draft position basically for years to come. One day with enough of those picks we turn things around but will be 5+ years.

I've given up on CBJ catching us, but if we can fall to #2 then the worst that could happen is we pick 4th, but we would be unlikely to fall that far. The second to worst record in the regular season is more likely to pick fourth than any other specific position. The odds (based on last year's numbers - the numbers listed on tankathon) are 13.5% to go up to first, 14.4% to stay at second, 32.0% to fall to third, and 40.2% to fall to fourth. That's not to say it will definitely happen, it's 48.7% more likely that the second worst team picks top three than falling to fourth, but that's still fairly likely. Draft Position of the team that finished second from the bottom of the standings- 2022: 3
- 2021: 3 - note: First year with only 2 lottery slots
- 2020: 5
- 2019: 5
- 2018: 4
- 2017: 5
- 2016: 4

Oof. I stand corrected. It makes sense. In order for the odds to be remotely decent for any of the teams below you (including just 1 spot below) a team can't have a massive chance of winning.

Need Columbus to win this game but Arizona came with seven defenders and seem to be spreading the minutes well among them.
