I was really confused there. They were talking about EK65 (as Karlsson) and then it showed the faceoff odds with Karlsson. Took a minute to realize it was William Karlsson in the graphic.

Good result for the tank. SJ got the result they deserved tonight. Couldn't keep out of the penalty box, granted a couple of soft calls, and they didn't match FV intensity the entire 3rd period.

Carrier tied for 3rd in the NHL with 7 game winning goals with McJesus and Point. Eh, we made that easy for him. Again two Sharks going to one guy before either realize it's happening and there's an opponent all alone in a perfect place to abuse our Goalies whom naturally a large segment of the fan base wholeheartedly blame. Rinse repeat.

Way to salvage the 0 points! All in all pretty good. -Kahko looked great -KoC, the King of Cheese, Marchessault, thought he had a goal but didn't. So sad. -FV couldn't score on 7 power plays.
Team will be frustrated but can still feel good about being on the cusp against much better teams. Last game's outcome would have definitely been different except for ref errors. So- helping the tank while the team has hope that maybe they aren't terrible.
In addition to Bonino, Ryan Warsofsky was going off on the offical with around 15 seconds left. Also, I counted 7FV players on the ice at one point.
Can we catch Anaheim? Currently 4th in pts and %. We have a game in hand and 3 in hand vs the Chicago.

I know it's impossible to say because we don't know what we would get back from Timo or if EK65 is going to be here. But as a baseline if they were both around, it's easy to see with a few things falling into place that we could merely be a bad team next year that just misses the playoffs. Bords and Eklund step up. Luck with knyzhov returning and maybe Kniazev steps up. We get one good cheap pickup like Eyssimont. Kahko/Reimer end up being a good duo. I know that is a lot of if's, but it makes the urgency to go for bottom three even stronger this year- not just because of the Bedard sweepstakes.
But if we lost EK65 and Timo for next year, it's hard to see a return for them that would make us a better team than this year in the next few years even if the above things happen.

But if we lost EK65 and Timo for next year, it's hard to see a return for them that would make us a better team than this year in the next few years even if the above things happen. Next year, yes, but even that depends on: a) where we end up drafting b) if Eklund, Bordeleau, et al. can come up and inject some life into our moribund squad c) if we are able to get the likes of a Nemec, Bouchard, and/or Barrie in our trade(s) It's not unreasonable to think we can get one of the two lottery picks, and let's just say (dare to dream) we get Bedard, if he performs along with Eklund and Bordeleau (rooks, all of them, but still), that moves us along the rebuild path more quickly than we would if we pick at 5 or 6. And don't forget, in a historically deep draft, if we get the 1sts of, say, EDM and NJ in those trades, it's not unreasonable to think one or both of those teams flames out in the 1st round (and frankly there's no guarantee EDM even makes the playoffs; they should, but this move wouldn't make them a Cup contender) and we're picking again in the late teens and probably the early 20s. If there's a draft to have three firsts in, it's this one. Some ifs, again, but not unreasonable ones considering NJ's playoff inexperience in a deep EC and EDM's ability to muck things up come playoff time. And don't forget, while I would hate having Timo Time and EK65 off the squad, even with some level of retention on EK's contract for the next four years, that's still over $10M annually we have to try and fill out our roster with difference-makers, even if they aren't sexy names. TL;DR, things will become clearer after March 3rd, and crystal-clear once the results of the draft lottery are known, so it's impossible to say for certain how are rebuild is going to go in the short-term. It may blow up in our faces like rebuilds have done in BUF and EDM in recent memory, but things could also end up going very well for us in the next five months or so (at least on paper). Time will tell!

But if we lost EK65 and Timo for next year, it's hard to see a return for them that would make us a better team than this year in the next few years even if the above things happen. Yeah, it doesn't make sense to trade EK65/Timo if our goal is to be competitive in the next year or 2. Those are very good players and freeing up cap space doesn't automatically make it worthwhile. That's especially true if we're retaining cap on EK65 (retaining on Timo doesn't really matter since it would be gone after this year). If we retain 50% on EK65 we're paying $5.75M for him to not play for us, so we're essentially adding that price to anybody that replaces him. It's unlikely we're going to get someone better than either of them with the trade, but the idea is we'll get people who are close in value and match up better with our timeline. Assuming we're trying to compete in 4 seasons, would you rather your core be built around a 30 year old Timo or a few prospects in their early to mid 20s? At 30 it's not terrible but not the best, but how about a 36 year old Karlsson?

Can we catch Anaheim? Currently 4th in pts and %. We have a game in hand and 3 in hand vs the Chicago. Absolutely we can, and here's why. Your point about games in hand is one reason, but an even bigger one is we will lose more from our squad through trades than any of the other teams will. EK65 and Meier (if both get traded) account for an unnaturally high amount of our scoring, so we will crater offensively if both are moved. Hertl/Couture might replace a few goals because more of the focus will be on them, but we will have no way to replace most of the scoring we will lose. ANA, CHI, CBJ, AZ...none of them will suffer as much via trade losses. --19 of AZ's final 27 games are at home where they are far better, so even with the loss of Chychrun they'll be in good shape. --ANA has finally figure out how to win some games, and they aren't going to be losing anyone of real consequence, so them overtaking us is realistic, even likely. --CHI might lose, what? An aging, injury-prone Kane (if he even makes up his mind enough to ask for a trade to a certain team)? An average-at-best Toews? One other thing to consider about these three teams is they have so many potential three-point games against each other (and teams like MTL and VAN who are trying to make a late charge into the bottom 5), so even if some of these teams don't win a lot of their remaining games, they'll definitely win some, against each other, and the loser might even be able to rack up some loser points as well. Anything is possible, but the only team I don't see us finishing ahead of in a race to the bottom is Columbus. For whatever reason their suckitude seems to be on a whole other level this season and I don't see it happening, especially because they have the fewest (or just about) games remaining against the bottom 7 or so teams, so they have fewer chances to directly impact their own or any of those other teams' positions by playing against them. Odd as it is to say, I'd love for us to finish last to ensure we'd pick no lower than 3rd in the draft, but I don't think that happens. And thanks to some recent education from jamnjon, I wouldn't feel great about us finishing 2nd because apparently there's a great chance we would fall to 4th. So, my hope is Anaheim surpasses us and we manage to fall to 3rd, and perhaps we'll be one of those lucky teams who snags a lottery spot.
