In a weird way, competing for the bottom three is more exciting than competing for the top three. It has me following other games more closely. And yes, it's a lottery but just to play devil's advocate, finishing last means more than finishing first; in this century, the President's Trophy winner has won the Stanley Cup in 2013 (Chicago), 2008 (Detroit), and then back to 2002 (Detroit) and 2001(Colorado). In the last eleven years, outside of that 2013 season, only one President's Trophy winning team has made it past the quarterfinals. (I wonder if over time, being in the top three means less than it used to due to more teams/game changing-more parity, etc).
So yes, as a long-time Sharks fan, things I have to tell myself: competing for the bottom three is more interesting/important! And it means all sorts of weird things: rooting for zero points and losing "the right way", rooting for last minute goal comebacks by the opposing team (which is losing the wrong way), four-point-division-rival games defined as other teams in the bottom 5, rooting for the Ducks??!!

It's been stated for most situations that finishing with the best record takes so much effort, mentally and physically, that by the time the playoffs start, you're shot.
Best, most recent example is the Warriors when they won 73 games. They went far but ultimately probably did them in.

It’s almost a no lose situation. If the Sharks play well and win, we get to enjoy a fun victory. If they lose, we improve our draft lottery chances. The only bad thing is getting the stupid loser point. Those piss me off.
Go Sharks and Fuck Vegas!

With CBJ's win earlier today, the Ducks are now in last place. Need to keep up.

Watching Burnzie outdoors. Caps look like they bet on losing this game.

Watching Burnzie outdoors. Caps look like they bet on losing this game. The Caps aren't particularly good this year (and they are missing Ovie tonight). Hell, the Sharks beat them.

Not much of a reach but Washington is unlikely to make the playoffs. In fact they have so many UFA's that if they lose a few more in a row, look for them to start selling off

Even if they make the playoffs, they won't make it out of the 1st round in the East.

I was looking at the standings yesterday, I noticed only one team (CBJ) in the East had fewer than 50 points. In the West, 5 teams are under 50 points. The divide between the 2 conferences is so huge that it is really unfair to the Eastern teams.

Even if they make the playoffs, they won't make it out of the 1st round in the East. Finishing as a wild card in the East seems like a futile effort
